'The Modern Chair' exhibit in Palm Springs tells story of the evolution of homes
What's in a simple object such as a chair? If you visit the new exhibition "The Modern Chair" at the Palm Springs Art Museum Architecture and Design Center, you'll learn the answer is "a lot."
Each chair on display represents the history and challenges of design during the 20th century through today.
The designs tell a story of material shortages during World War II, new technology influencing cultural shifts and the evolution of the modern home and the furniture to match.
There are 60 pieces in the exhibition, numbered in chronological order.
Kicking things off at No. 1 isEuropean furniture manufacturer Gebrüder Thonet's 1904 bent-wood and wicker chair "Model 6009," later "B9." According to Architecture and Design Specialist and Curator Brad Dunning, this particular design is timeless and still appears in Paris bistros and cafes.
